Forgiveness continual or forever?

response_to_sin

I want to address this question thoroughly as this is a very good and well misunderstood doctrine.

To answer this lets break it into sections:

  1. Justification that is through Jesus Christ

  2. Gods word rightly divided and why it needs to be

  3. The reason why we don’t need to ask for more forgiveness from God, thus why the article is incorrect.

Justification that is through Jesus Christ

Lets consider what the bible says about those who are saved by the finished work of Jesus Christ (through His death, burial, and resurrection 1Cor 15:1-4)

Lets read to what magnitude we are forgiven.

  • sin will/can never be imputed to the believer

    • Romans 4:8
      • “Blessed [is] the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.”
    • 2Corinthians 5:19
      • 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
  • His righteousness is instead imputed unto me, He became sin, and I was made His righteousness. He did it all for me and you

    • 2 Corinthians 5:21
      • 21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
        • When God sees the forgiven sinner, He sees Jesus Christ in us and us in Him. This is why we have peace with God. Not because we “hold the line”.
        • Just think on this for a minute, we are made the righteousness of God. its not a back and forth, righteous, unrighteous, righteous, unrighteous.
          • If one believes this, then they cannot also believe that you cannot lose your salvation (which you cant lose your salvation, being SEALED with the Holy Spirit)
        • If it were really up to us, and God did impute sin unto us, when would we ever be Gods righteousness? never. There is nothing good in our flesh.
    • Romans 4:11
      • that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
    • Romans 4:21-24
      • 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
        23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
        24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
  • Jesus died for our sins ONCE, this is the payment for it all. To say that there is more sin for him to come wash away is to say “come die on the cross again because the first time was not good enough…” (not in word, but in action)

    • Romans 6:9
      • 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more;death hath no more dominion over him.
    • Romans 6:10
      • 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
    • what more can He do to wash sin than die for you and me? Think about it, He who was perfect died (for us)! We aren’t on a payment plan.
  • Sin cant be imputed to a dead person. Death means free from the law, free from sin. No catches, sin free for good

    • 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
  • sin can only be imputed to those who are still under the law; we cant be under the law and under grace

    • Romans 6:14
      • 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

There are so so many more verses like this which are absolute and undoubted to the person who reads the scripture honestly. To say that God will impute sin to me is a lie and contradiction of Gods gospel message. Let every man be a liar and God be true.

Gods word rightly divided

If I study the Bible without rightly dividing it, confusion is inevitable.
We don’t build arcs, we don’t offer sacrifices, we don’t bring offerings to a priest, we don’t speak in tongues. All these things are biblical, but must be understood within their dispensation context.

You and I are not Israel

  • God did not make a covenant with you that says “If you obey my law, then I will do …insert miracle here”
    • that was made exclusively to Israel
    • No, we are not spiritual Israel
    • His remnant will literally become the kingdom of Priests after tribulation

You must be thinking , so what about those other verses that say confess your sins, or faith without works is dead?

Lets examine just one of these real quick. This will lead into our next bullet point (which will all tie in at the end)

Both are true, but how can they both exist without contradiction. Understand the difference between Kingdom Gospel / Grace of God Gospel

  • James (one of the 12 apostles) writes
    • James 2:24
      • 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
  • Paul (the apostle chosen by Christ to the gentiles) writes:
    • Romans 4:5
      • 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

  • Here is another one
    • 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

There is no way around this. Either there is contradiction in Gods word (His word is perfect), or we are missing some very important context/information here…

2TIMOTHY 2:15
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This doesnt mean take parts of the bible out, or there is error. This means ask yourself, which part of Gods operation is this in?
The bible calls it “dispensation”

Who is speaking and to who?
What has already happened, what has not happened yet…
All scripture is for us, but not all scripture is to us or about us.

A couple of examples where we are already dividing Gods word, but ask yourself why? The answer is likely to be “well Im taught that in church”

  • Jesus told his disciples to not preach unto the gentiles.

    • Matthew 10:5-6
      • 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into [any] city of the Samaritans enter ye not:**
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
  • Jesus told the leper to go and offer his sacrifice to the High Priest after healing him.

    • Matthew 8:4
      • 4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
        • Note: Jesus recognized the law of Moses. Israel was to follow the leadership of Moses, yet they were not worshipers of Moses. To Moses He have the Law (to Israel), to Peter He gave the kingdom gospel (for Israel), to Paul He gave the grace gospel (for all). Jesus will return and the kingdom gospel will continue.
  • We would not observe the sabbath day and so on. There are many examples of this

    • understand that the bible talks about dispensations.
    • God does not change, but the way he operates does.
  • The kingdom gospel was given to the 12 apostles

    • The 12 disciples were not aware of the Grace gospel message that saves us today (which was given to Paul)
      • They did not understand why He had to be crucified, this is heavily emphasized in many places including all 4 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.
        • Luke 18
          • 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:
33 And they shall scourge [him], and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
            • Hid from them
              • important because later in Pauls epistles we read that it was finally revealed to Paul for us today.
            • The gospel that saves us today was hidden from the beginning of the world!
              • 9 And to make all [men] see what [is] the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
  • They did not even believe when He was risen from the dead

    • doubting Thomas
    • They ran to the tomb…
    • Luke 24
      • 10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary [the mother] of James, and other [women that were] with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
  • They rebuked Israel for the death of Jesus Christ (which we know to be the good news for us)

    • Acts 2:23,36
    • 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
  • The point is this, the gospel that the 12 disciples were given is NOT the same gospel that was given to Paul the apostle, nor can they be mixed/conflated/coalesced

    • Galatians 2:7-10
      • 7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as [the gospel] of the circumcision [was] unto Peter;
8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)
9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we [should go] unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.
        • you and I are not the circumcision
        • they recognized this INDEED is Gods work , and preached to different audiences. Peter to the remnant of Israel that new covenant, and Paul to the gentiles the revelation of the mystery of God which is the gospel of grace through Jesus Christ through faith alone.
  • Paul is our apostle, God gave him the hidden gospel and Satan does not want you or me to share it

  • Jesus sent Paul

    • Ephesians 3:1-7
      • 1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
        5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
        • Paul was given a different gospel, it preaches salvation through faith alone and completeness in Christ! Oh what peace!
          • Col 2:10
            • 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
        • We are reconciled (this means at complete peace, all paid, nothing owed)
          • 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, [I say], whether [they be] things in earth, or things in heaven.
    • Paul is our pattern
      • 1Timothy 1:16
        • 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
      • The gospel entrusted to Him was given by Jesus Christ, not taught to him by anyone else (including the 12 apostles)
        • Galatians 1:11-12
          • 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught [it], but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The reason why we don’t need to ask for more forgiveness from God, thus why this article is incorrect.

Its very simple. The author has conflated different gospels thus causing confusion and contradiction. You cannot blend Peters message (gospel of the kingdom for the remnant of Israel) with the mystery that was hid in God given to Paul for us today.
Remember even in the New Testament, they were still under the law. Forgiveness was conditional.
This is why almost every message you hear has “spiritualized interpretation” to make it fit.
Take His word literally. Its meant to be read literally.

2PETER 3:15-16
15 And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16 As also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Making Pauls gospel fit with works and continuing forgiveness takes a significant amount of “wresting” (twisting, molding)

Conclusion

Pauls epistles and the revelation revealed to him toward us gentiles teaches us some undeniable truths

  • we are complete in Christ Col 2:10
  • God has given us all spiritual blessings (we lack nothing) Eph 1:3
  • we cannot be seperated from the body of Christ, we cannot lose our salvation 1Cor 12:27 Eph 1:13
  • we are reconciled to God Rom 5:10 Col 1:21
  • Jesus is our propitiation (payment / satisfies God) – not us ourselves… Rom 3:25
  • we are dead with Christ Rom 6
  • we are risen with Him Col 2:12
  • we are not under the law Rom 6:14
  • we are under grace Rom 6:14
  • we are members of His body Eph 5:30
    – where there can be no sin
  • God will not impute sin to those who have been saved by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ Rom 4:8
  • I am always right with God because I was made the righteousness in God through Jesus. My prayers are always heard and not hindered. Not because I am anything, but because what Christ did. Rom 8:34-39

The attitude we should have toward sin is to stop, thank God for what He did, turn from that sin and move forward in God. Rom 6:1-2

to say that God needs to forgive me of sins (still) is to say that you are not forgiven (of this sin over here)

  • to say that he WILL impute sin
  • to say that we are not complete in him (or that we can be made incomplete)
  • denies the power of God to forgive all sin
  • to say that His death burial resurection was not enough, we need more
  • to say that we “were” reconciled or not at all
  • to say that we CAN lose our salvation
  • to say that the law has dominion over us
  • to deny the gospel of grace of Jesus Christ

Asking for forgiveness after reading Romans 4:8 requires lack of faith and to deny the truths found in Pauls epistles

To merge all the bible into one gospel is to “wrest” the word of God and not rightly dividing it.
In this case, you must wrestle contradiction after contradiction. You must strive to please God , instead of resting in the peace that He has given.
Mixing the gospel of the kingdom (Peter) with the gospel of peace (Paul) can only lead to confusion and frustration.

Consider this:
If a man was away from the congregation while Moses delivered the law, and he come back after (unaware that the law was given). If that man were to work on the sabbath day, he would not know that he had broken the law. He was not aware of the dispensational change that God had ordained. He would suffer death for this.

Its so important to truly study Gods word and believe it for yourself. You cannot put your trust in tradition, man, church. It must be an allegiance to His word alone.

In 20 years of being a “christian” no one has ever taught me these simple truths of dispensation/rightly dividing/ the difference of the 2 gospels. But its right there! God has truly blessed me beyond what I can comprehend. I am fully persuaded by Gods word the He is able and will continue to guide me in His truth.

His word makes sooo much more sense to me now.
I feel like Iv been saved from bondage that the “church” imposed by trying to put me back under the law.
I live for Christ because He made me free.
Nothing and no one or anything I can ever do will ever set God against me. I am washed
I am reconciled, I am made complete in HIM

Put your faith in HIS WORD, for He holds it above his name.

EPHESIANS 3:9
9 And to make all [men] see what [is] the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

ROMANS 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
